About the 1/2 oz RCM Gold Coin
In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint first produced the Gold Maple Leaf series. Investors could only purchase the South African Gold Krugerrand as a gold bullion coin at the time, however, due to South Africa’s persistent apartheid practices, the West increasingly boycotted the country economically. This prompted Western mints to produce their own gold bullion coins, and the Royal Canadian Mint created the Gold Maple Leaf coin.
Why the maple leaf? The maple leaf, the distinctive leaf of the maple tree, is Canada’s most widely recognized national symbol. It’s popularity dates back many centuries, with indigenous people of eastern Canada using the maple tree for its sweet swap and other goods it produced. By the early 1700s, the French Canadians around the Saint Lawrence River had adopted the maple leaf as their symbol. In the 1800s, the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste proposed the leaf as one of several symbols to represent the organization.
The maple leaf gradually became a national symbol. In 1868, it was incorporated into the coat of arms of Ontario and Quebec. In 1921, it was added to the Canadian coat of arms, followed by the flag in 1965 and RCM bullion in 1979.
Features of the 1/2 oz RCM Gold Coin
The front of 2022 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins shows a picture of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003. It is the fourth portrait of the Queen to appear on Canadian coins and the first portrait of Elizabeth II as Queen of England without a crown.
On the back of the the latest Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins, there is a sugar maple leaf, designed by Walter Ott in 1979 for the first Gold Maple Leaf Series coin. Since its first appearance, this design has been used. Below the picture is the face value of the coin, $20, and the year it was made, 2019. On the back of the coin, there is a stylized Maple Leaf with the words “CANADA,” “FINE GOLD,” “1/2 OZ OR PUR,” and “9999” around it.
For security measures, coins from 2015 onwards have radial lines in the background of both sides of the coin. Each 1/2 oz coin also has a unique privy mark and the year it was made in a tiny engraving that can only be seen with a microscope.
