About the Gold Maple Leaf
The Maple Leaf has long been recognized as Canada’s national symbol. The maple tree itself was originally a staple food used by indigenous people who valued the sweet sap (which was turned into maple syrup). In times of war, the maple leaf was also believed to hold medicinal power to heal wounds, and it was often used instead of bandages and medicine. For these two reasons, the leaf became a symbol of Canada – it was even added to the country’s flag in 1965.
Walter Ott designed the first Gold Maple Leaf coin, released in 1979, in competition with the South African Krugerrand. It was the first bullion coin to be made of 99.9% pure 24-carat gold, and since then, the Gold Maple Leaf has become one of the most valuable and sought-after precious metal coins in the world. All the gold used for these coins comes from mines located within Canada.
The Royal Canadian Mint has made several limited-edition Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins over the years to mark important Canadian and mint history moments. And in 2007, a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin that weighed 100 kilograms and was 99.999% pure gold was created. The huge coin is worth $1 million and is the biggest coin ever made. It is 50 centimetres across and 3 centimetres thick.
Features of the 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin
On the front of the coin, you’ll find a modern portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the year of issue and the legal tender value of $5. The right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II changes from year to year. From the time it came out in 1979 until 1989, the design was dominated by a portrait of the Queen by Arnold Machin. From 1990 to 2003, Dora de Pédery-Hunt’s design took its place, followed by Susanna Blunt’s design since 2004.
On the back is a large sugar maple leaf, Canada’s national symbol. Both sides are set against micro-engraved radial lines that include the privy mark, type of metal, weight, and purity.
There are coins in BU condition that don’t show any signs of wear and tear. Your purchase will come with an assay certificate signed by RCM’s Chief Assayer, printed on the back of the card. It proves that your coin is real and 99.99% pure gold. It will be sealed in a plastic case or flip, ready to give as a gift or to add to your collection.
