The American Gold Eagle was introduced on November 24, 1986. After 35 years, the iconic American Eagle Silver Coin has undergone an updated reverse design by the renowned Emily Damstra. The American Eagle remains one of the most iconic and highly purchased bullion coins and enjoys a highly liquid market.
The design on the coin’s obverse side was taken from the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph A. Weinman, used initially on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin of the United States from 1916 to 1947. This beautiful design had been a public favourite and one of the most popular designs of any United States coinage of modern times, silver or otherwise. The design was revived for the Gold Eagle decades later. The obverse is inscribed with the year of minting or issuance, LIBERTY, and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The new reverse design was introduced in 2021 and featured for the fourth consecutive time with the 2024 release. It displays a left-profile relief imponent bald eagle mid-flight holding an oak branch in its talons.
ABOUT THE AMERICAN GOLD EAGLE SERIES
American Gold Eagle coins are the official gold bullion coin of the United States. The United States Mint first released it on November 24, 1986. American Gold Eagles are generally available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz and are made of .9167 Pure Gold (22 kt). The Gold Eagle has been produced at three mints: the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint, although the latter makes the most significant amount of coins.
ABOUT THE UNITED STATES MINT
Established in 1792 as the first national mint in the United States, the United States Mint is a Department of the Treasury bureau responsible for official legal tender coinage production. The United States Mint has a mission to serve Americans as the sole manufacturer and distributor of circulating currency coins and other official American coinage. The U.S. Mint also produces commemorative coins for collectors, silver and gold bullion coins for investors (such as the popular Eagle and Buffalo series), and Congressional Medals.
