After World War II, most nations abandoned the gold standard, and before 1967, gold coins were generally used as circulation coins. Therefore, although gold Krugerrands are considered legal tender, they are not assigned a face value as they are not meant for circulation but for private gold ownership.
The reverse bears the classic image of South Africa’s national animal, the Springbok Antelope, traversing the ‘veld’ of its homeland. Set within a light, decorative frame, you’ll find the ‘Krugerrand’ title, the issue’s year, content details (shown in Afrikaans and English), and weight.
The obverse bears the likeness of the former South African Republic’s final president (later known as Transvaal), Paul Kruger, who lived from 1825 to 1904. Also, on the obverse, within a decorative frame, the South African legend is in both Afrikaans and English.
While Paul Kruger is considered a controversial figure due to his status as the ‘face of the South African ‘Boer,’ his death precedes the beginning of the Apartheid regime by 44 years, and the bullion coin that bears his name is considered a welcome and much-needed source of revenue for the New South Africa.
ABOUT THE RAND REFINERY
Established in Germiston, South Africa, in 1920, The Rand refinery was constructed to efficiently maximize the abundant quantities of gold in the beautiful African nation. The Rand refinery became globally recognized as the sole refiner and producer of the world’s first bullion coin, the Gold Krugerrand, possibly the most recognizable bullion coin. In addition to the production of the Krugerrand, the Rand Refinery is also responsible for producing sleek, elegantly styled gold ingots.
