Get Your Hands on The Famous American Eagle
The 1 oz American Gold Eagle is the biggest gold coin made by the US Mint and is a great addition to your investment portfolio or an ideal gift. These coins are 22 karat gold, and though they include a small amount of copper and silver, they will have 1 troy oz of pure gold. The Gold Eagle is both a collectable and a good investment.
About the American Gold Eagle Coin
The first Gold Eagle coins were issued in 1986. Initially worth $10, it was later split into smaller denominations – Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, and Double Eagle. As with those made today, the first Gold Eagles were also minted in 22-karat gold, though it was British standard crown gold.
In 2021, in honor of the American Eagle Bullion Coin’s 35th anniversary, the United States Mint made a new design for the famous coin – the first time the coin’s design had been changed since it was first made in 1986. So that it looked closer to Saint-Gaudens’ original vision, the Mint used the original bronze cast. Changes were also made to the Capitol Building, the stars, the torch, the sun rays, and other parts of the design.
Features of the American Gold Eagle coin
You’ll find two main eagle designs with this coin, depending on the year you purchase. The common design is based on the famous “Double Eagle” $20 gold piece by Augustus Saint-Gaudens from 1907 to 1933.
Alternatively, the 2021 version of the coin has a bold, up-close portrait of an eagle by Jennie Norris. Since the series began in 1986, this is the first new design to be added.
The obverse shows Lady Liberty with long hair holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Augustus Saint-Gaudens first created this Lady Liberty design at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who wanted to change the look of American coins in the early 1900s after announcing he found them “hideous”. Saint-Gaudens went on to create the designs for the “Eagle” and “Double Eagle” gold coins.
On the back of this coin, it also says “LIBERTY” and the year. On the front, it says, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The US Mint backs US Legal Tender of this coin, offering it a face value of $50. New security features, such as a reeded edge, have also been added to the 2021 coins.
The U.S. Mint makes American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins in four sizes: 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz sizes. These coins are made of 22-karat gold and tiny amounts of an alloy to make them harder so they don’t get scratched. The US government guarantees these coins contain the stated amount of real gold weight in troy ounces.
