About the Perth Mint & Kangaroo Gold

The Perth Mint was established in 1899 and was previously one of three Australian branches of the Royal Mint, before the government of Western Australia took control. Today, it produces coins for everyday usage in Australia in addition to bullion items, such as coins and bars.

The Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins are some of the most famous bullion gold coins that the Perth Mint has manufactured. This popular series of gold coins was introduced as the Australian Gold Nugget for the first time in 1986. In 1989, the designs were altered to depict the kangaroo, the most recognizable mammal in Australia, and the name was changed to Kangaroo Coins.

The designs on these official Australian gold bullion coins change year, and they have become a staple of gold coin collections and precious metal investment portfolios. The Perth Mint has also produced numerous other coin series, including the Kookaburra Series, Lunar Series, and Koala Series.

Features of the 1 oz Kangaroo Gold Coin

1 oz Kangaroo Gold coins have been made for almost 30 years and the designs on the back change every year – though they always have a kangaroo theme. Kangaroo coins have shown these animals hopping, running across the outback, looking around, standing in groups, and more. Neil Hollis designed the 2022 Perth Mint Kangaroo 1oz Gold coin. The back will generally include “KANGAROO”, The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, and the year.

The obverse of these coins resembles general Australian coins and until 2022, they have always had a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on them. The picture of the Queen has been used since 1998 and was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, a well-known designer, to be used on Australian coins that are legal tender. After the death of the Queen in 2022, coins will feature King Charles III instead.

These coins have been produced by the Perth Mint in sizes of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilogram.

There is even a 1-ton gold kangaroo coin, the world’s largest gold coin. Weighing over 31,150 troy ounces, it is listed in the Guinness World Record for heaviest gold coin, and it is on display at the Gold Exhibition at the Perth Mint.

These 1 oz Kangaroo Gold Coins are sold in a condition called “uncirculated,” and arrive in a plastic case to keep them safe. Shop for this beautiful coin today and add it to your collection.
