About the American Buffalo Coin
The American Buffalo coin’s design actually mimics a much older coin, the Buffalo nickel – or Indian Head nickel, which was minted between 1913 and 1938.
Interesting facts about the design:
- The Native American on the back of the coin is not a particular person, but rather a mix of three Native Americans, including Iron Tail, an Oglala Lakota chief who was well-known in the late 1800s. He was one of the stars of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows and was often photographed wearing traditional Native American clothes.
- The Buffalo Nickel was the first time an animal that wasn’t an eagle was on a United States coin.
- The first buffalo nickel had a picture of the animal standing on a hill. Later, the hill was flattened to make room for the words “five cents” and protect the coins from wear.
Features of the 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin
The American Buffalo is based on the design of the first “Indian Head” or “Buffalo” Nickel, made by James Earle Fraser and first put into circulation in 1913. The front of the coin has a picture of a Native American’s face. Fraser made this picture by combining the faces of three real-life tribal leaders. This side has an engraving of the word “Liberty” and the year it was made.
Interestingly, proof American Buffalo coins have a “W” mint mark just below the largest feather to the left of the portrait. This means that the coin was made at the West Point United States Mint. Though bullion American Buffalo coins are also made at West Point, they don’t have a mark that says where they were made.
The back has a picture of an American Buffalo with the weight, value, and amount of gold on it. The classic buffalo art is based on Black Diamond, a bison who lived in the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 1900s. The bison takes up most of the obverse face, which also has engravings of “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” and the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, and face value.
The American Gold Buffalo has a diameter of 32.7mm, a thickness of 2.95mm, and reeded edges. It weighs 31.1035 grams. As a legal form of payment in the United States, the government guarantees this coin’s weight and purity.
