About the Britannia Coin
Britannia has represented Britain for hundreds of years, first appearing on British coins back in 122AD, designed by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The design has changed over time, with the current design being created by Philip Nathan, a sculptor, in 1987. In this design, he gave her a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace, and a trident for her ties to the sea.
When the Romans left Britain in the early 400s, Britannia disappeared from coins and didn’t show up again until the 1600s. Under King Charles II, the British navy was in danger, and the king hoped that putting Britannia back on the coins, it would give the country courage. She has remained on the coins ever since.
The first coins made for the international bullion markets (by the Royal Mint) that featured Britannia were made of gold and were released in 1987. Silver coins were then developed in 1997 and platinum coins in 2018.
Since it was originally conceived in 1997, the silver Britannia has become one of the most popular bullion coins thanks to its nearly perfect design and security as an investment. The 2021 version of the Britannia is a mix of tradition and new ideas, and it includes new, improved features that make it easy to verify and trade.
Features of the 10 oz 2021 Britannia Silver Coin
On the front of the coin is a picture of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Jody Clark in 2015 and sits on a guilloche background with the words “ELIZABETH II D G REG FD” and the face value. This is the fifth time a picture of the Queen has been featured on a British coin. It shows the Queen from the right side, with the Royal Diadem crown on her head.
On the back is a picture of Britannia by Philip Nathan, which is also found on the gold and platinum coins in the series. Britannia is always shown on the coast, facing gale-force winds with her right arm outstretched and holding a trident. In her left hand, she has a shield with the Union Jack and an olive branch.
Security features include the radial lines in the background, designed to look like the waves are coming to life when they hit a certain light. This advanced technology is a complicated design, making it very hard to replicate.
