About Britannia

The Silver Britannia 10 oz Silver Bar was first released by the Royal Mint in 2018. Though the figure of Britannia has been around for over 2,000 years, this was the first time it was used in a bar by the Royal Mint. She first appeared on a coin in 1997.

Britannia’s design is based on British folklore, culture, and the history of the British Empire. The figure of Britannia is generally likened to Queen Boudica or Boadicea, the leader of the Celtic Iceni tribe who led a rebellion against the Roman empire. However, Britannia predates this and has been around since the Romans settled in the British Isles. It is based on Minerva, the Roman Goddess of arts, trade, strategy, and wisdom. Her figure has been seen on British coins since 122AD.

The first coins were made to honor Emperor Hadrian, with the following coins made by Antoninus Pius between 138AD and 160AD. She then disappeared from coins until the 1600s when King Charles II chose to put her back on. Today, she remains prominent on the 50 pence and £2 coins.

Features of the 10 oz Britannia Silver Bar

The obverse includes the official seal of The Royal Mint and the words “The Royal Mint” at the top. There are also the words “10 oz 999 FINE SILVER” and a unique serial number on the coin. The background is made up of wavy lines, and at the bottom, there is a scene of five waves coming together.

On the reverse, the figure of Britannia looks to her left, watching for threats to the Kingdom she protects. She is dressed in a gown and wears a helmet and face shield. Britannia holds the Trident in her left hand, and in her right, she holds her shield, which has the flag of Great Britain. In the lower left corner of the shield, the word “BRITANNIA” is written in a single line. A design of wavy lines fills the background as a tribute to British sailors.

This bar is backed and guaranteed by the Government of Great Britain and the Royal Mint. In terms of size, it is around 6.4 millimetres thick, and its face is approximately 90 millimetres long and 51 millimetres wide. It also has built-in security against counterfeiting.
